NEW DELHI: Ambush marketing's shadow has been removed from the ongoing ICC Champion's Trophy in England as the players concerned have taken positive initiatives.

Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan have asked their sponsor Tata Indicom to withdraw advertising in the Indian market that has been seen as an attempt at ambush marketing against Hutch, which also operates in India and is one of the official sponsors of the present tournament.

"The players have told the Board (of Control for Cricket in India) that they will inform their sponsors to withdraw the advertisements during the period stipulated in the contract they signed for this tournament," Indian team manager Gautam Dasgupta was quoted by United News of India in report from Birmingham.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had written to the Indian cricket board drawing its attention to an infringement of the ambush-marketing clause in the player contracts for the Champions Trophy. Tata Indicom is a competitor for Hutch, one of the official sponsors.

The Indian team manager confirmed that he had received a letter from the BCCI in this regard.

"I have conveyed the Board's message to the players," he told the news agency.

The clause was a bone of contention before the last ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka and the 2003 World Cup in Africa. It prevents players from endorsing a product which is in direct competition to the official sponsors for the entire duration of the event.
